Few private equity founders can point to a single moment that shaped their personal and professional lives in equal measure. For Reeve Waud, that moment came on August 20, 1988, when he married Melissa Ann Wheeler at the First Church of Round Hill in Greenwich, Connecticut. The ceremony was officiated by Dr. Olin Robinson, then the president of Middlebury College, where both the bride and groom had graduated as members of the class of 1985.
Nearly four decades later, Reeve Waud is preparing to celebrate 38 years of marriage. That personal milestone coincides with a professional record that includes founding Waud Capital Partners, acquiring more than 480 companies, and building Acadia Healthcare into one of the largest behavioral health providers in the country.
A Connecticut Wedding and a Shared Alma Mater
The Waud-Wheeler wedding brought together two prominent families. Melissa, the daughter of Russell Phillip and Dorothy Ann Wheeler of Greenwich and Verbier, Switzerland, had attended Miss Porter’s School before Middlebury. Reeve, the son of Cornelius Byron and Corinna Roosevelt Reeve Waud of Lake Forest, Illinois, earned his BA in Economics before going on to complete his MBA at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.
The couple’s Middlebury connection gave their wedding day a particularly personal quality, with the college president himself presiding. It was a fitting beginning for a partnership that would stretch across the decades. Today, Reeve Waud continues to draw on the same values of loyalty and shared purpose that defined that day.
From Newlyweds to Business Builders
Five years after the wedding, Reeve Waud launched Waud Capital Partners in Lake Forest, Illinois, starting with just $5,000 and a belief that partnering with strong operators could produce lasting results. The firm’s first fund didn’t close until 1999, raising $100 million. Since then, it has grown into a team of nearly 70 professionals managing approximately $4.6 billion in assets under management.
The firm focuses on two sectors—healthcare and software & technology—and has completed more than 480 investments. That track record has earned Waud Capital Partners a respected position among middle-market private equity firms based in Chicago.
Acadia Healthcare and a Broader Legacy
Among the firm’s most significant achievements is the creation of Acadia Healthcare, which Waud Capital formed in late 2005. Acadia has since grown into the largest stand-alone behavioral health provider in the United States, operating more than 250 facilities across the country and Puerto Rico.
Reeve Waud also serves on the board of the Northwestern Memorial Foundation and is a trustee at the Art Institute of Chicago. These commitments reflect a life shaped by the same principles that marked that summer day in Greenwich—partnership, consistency, and a willingness to invest in what matters.
